This month, Speedtest Intelligence released its Q3 2023 results for the Speedtest Global Index report. The report takes a look at a long list of Internet providers, from cable companies to wireless providers, to see how fast they really are. It is the 5G home internet service that has seen a steady increase in speed.
According to the report, 5G home Internet services averaged 213.75 Mbps down and 23.71 Mbps up. This is an increase from the same period last year when 5G home internet averaged 172.30 Mbps down and 22.40 Mbps up.
We’re still waiting on third quarter subscriber numbers, but second quarter growth was very strong for T-Mobile and Verizon. Growth in 5G home Internet service was evident in the second quarter, with new Verizon and T-Mobile subscribers outpacing the rest of the broadband industry.
The two combined for 890,000 net new subscribers, or the fifth consecutive quarter in which fixed wireless services surpassed 800,000, according to Lichtman Research Group. The industry as a whole actually added just 840,000 subscribers, a lower figure that would cause big losses on the DSL side.
AT&T is also joining the 5G home internet race this year with the launch of AT&T Air in several markets. AT&T and Verizon, in particular, are eager to offer 5G home Internet services as other parts of their businesses are hemorrhaging. The top wireline companies lost a combined 510,000 DSL customers, offset by 450,000 new fiber customers. In total, they lost 60,000 net customers in the second quarter.
