VRChat is coming soon to Pico 4

VRChat is now listed as “coming soon” in the app store on the Pico 4.

VRChat continues to be the leading virtual reality social platform with millions of users. On Meta Quest headsets it’s almost always a top 10 popular app, and on Steam (where it also supports non-VR) it usually has tens of thousands of concurrent players.

The platform arrived as a surprise launch title for the original Oculus Quest in 2019 and for Android phones earlier this year.

However, most of the PC world and avatars are too detailed to run on mobile chipsets, so VRChat takes a piecemeal approach. All worlds and avatars must have a mobile-optimized version if the developer wants Quest & phone players to be able to join or use them. Creators can upload two versions of the same content, one for PC and one for mobile.

Given that the Pico 4 uses the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 mobile chipset as the Quest 2, the Pico 4 will almost certainly support these mobile versions as well.

Last year VRChat added support for controller-less hand tracking on the Quest. The Pico 4 also supports hand tracking, and ByteDance has recently improved it with software updates, so this may be a supported input method on the Pico 4 as well.

The Pico 4’s specs and price slot it squarely between the Quest 2 and Quest 3, offering pancake lenses and 2K panels while still using the original XR2 Gen 1 chip.

We reached out to VRChat to confirm that Pico’s store listing is accurate and to ask for more details. We will update this article if we receive a response.

Pico 4 review: Should you really buy one instead of the Quest 2?

The Pico 4 ships today, and we’ve had a chance to go through it quickly over the past few weeks. Pico is not new to VR, having introduced its first headset in 2016. It was acquired last year by ByteDance, the Chinese tech giant behind TikTok. Pico has always been like that
