The first post-launch update for Meta Quest 3 is here, and Meta is wasting no time adding new features to the headset. But one particular feature designed to fix the Quest 3’s battery life issues is causing a lot of controversy.
The Meta Quest v59 update, rolling out gradually over the next few days, adds a battery saver mode found in the full settings menu under “Power.” Interestingly, we can see in the current version of v57 a “battery saver” switch that works with “reduced overall graphics fidelity”.
Although the Quest 3 has an official battery life estimate of 2.2 hours, we’ve found the headset to only manage two hours for a single gaming session, proving that the headset’s more powerful Snapdragon chip and higher-resolution display do the trick. to give Some trade-offs work.
The battery saver mode certainly helps, but it also negates one of the main reasons I bought the Quest 3 over the Quest 2: the graphics boost.
Meta doesn’t specify how it implements this demotion, whether it’s a lower refresh rate, longer load times, or something else. Given the Quest 3-specific graphics enhancements supported by this headset, we’re curious to see how far the headset can go without issues on more demanding titles. We’ve emailed Meta for comment and will update this post with any details they provide.
Beyond this feature, the v59 update brings many additions and fixes, which are outlined in this meta blog post and release notes.
VR-focused YouTubers will appreciate the ability to open YouTube Live Chat on the headset, allowing you to respond to comments during a live stream without having to remove your Quest 2 or 3. It is currently in early access, so you must request access. Meta Quest headsets don’t currently support live streaming to YouTube, so we’re curious to see if the feature adds that feature as well.
For everyday Quest gamers, there’s a handy new shortcut if you run into frustrating bugs. Tap the Meta/Oculus button on the right touch controller five times, and it will take you directly to the bug report form.
And now you can use emoji reactions or send avatar stickers to people’s messages instead of having to use text every time. Plus, your People panel now has an Activities tab that’s supposed to make it easier to see what friends are playing and join group calls — along with “recommended apps and games for your group to get together.”
For new Quest 3 owners, you’ll appreciate the “suggested border” feature. Whenever you place your headset somewhere other than your normal gaming space, instead of forcing you to draw it from scratch, it suggests a boundary that you can edit based on your surroundings.
Specific to mixed reality gaming, the new “Assisted Space Setup” performs a similar function: if you open an MR app, it runs a quick 3D scan of your environment and creates a simple representation of your room’s surfaces. including walls, tables and other furniture, so you don’t have to manually add them to your space.”
Meta even promises to improve the appearance of your hands in Quest 3’s pass mode, “while making it easier to interact with panels and apps in mixed reality.” The challenge is to make your hands visible without blocking the view of menus and text. We are curious to see what changes the meta will make.
Rounding out the long list of updates, Meta has promised to eventually bring the Remote Display app—previously exclusive to the Quest Pro—to the Quest 3 and 2 so you can view your PC’s desktop on the headset. Your avatar in Horizon Home will finally have legs for the first time. And the Family Center in the Meta app will soon let parents set “daily time limits and scheduled breaks” for their teens or children.
Meta has improved Quest 2 with updates in the years since its launch. We’re glad to see it immediately take the same approach with Quest 3.
Meta Quest 3 has improved graphics resolution and performance, a move to full-color mixed reality for games and spatial awareness, and other upgrades that make it a bit shorter than Quest 2. Battery saver mode or battery pack should solve this problem. Still, and in many other ways, it’s a great device for VR fans.
