Viasat wireless internet system is added to Canadian airlines

A Canadian airline has chosen Carlsbad-based Viasats technology for high-speed Internet access on its flights.

Toronto-based Porter Airlines will install Viasats In-Flight Entertainment systems on 20 new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, the companies announced Oct. 18. These planes are expected to enter service in 2024.

According to the company, Porter is the only Canadian airline to offer free and high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi access for its entire Embraer E195-E2 fleet. The high-speed wireless internet system uses Viasats Ka-band satellite technology.

“It’s exciting for the Viasat team to be a part of the continued growth of Porter Airlines and its distinctive passenger experience with free Wi-Fi,” Don Buchman, Viasat’s vice president and general manager of commercial aviation, said in a news release. As Porter Airlines adds new E195-E2 aircraft to its existing fleet and expands its route network, we look forward to supporting its vision for best-in-class entertainment and connectivity.

Although Porter does not fly to San Diego or Carlsbads McClellan-Palomar, it does fly to Los Angeles and San Francisco.
