The White House has designated 31 National Technology Innovation Centers

The White House has designated 31 regional innovation hubs through the Tech Hub program and this week officially designated them as nationally recognized tech hubs.

The Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) officially announced the selection of 31 technology consortia in 32 states and Puerto Rico on Monday.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in a press release that the Tech Hubs program is critical to increasing innovation across the country by spurring advanced technology investments and creating 21st century job opportunities in people’s backyards. Each of these consortia will help us ensure that the industries of the future and their well-paying jobs start, grow and stay in the United States.

The selection process for the Technology Center designation was highly competitive, as EDA reviewed nearly 400 applications from regional technology consortia that included economic development agencies, state and local entities, and workforce development agencies. To be selected, each applicant submitted detailed strategic plans outlining how they plan to enhance their region’s capabilities in the production, commercialization and deployment of critical technologies if accepted.

The selected organizations represent a range of technology disciplines, including autonomous systems, quantum computing, biotechnology, precision medicine, clean energy innovation and semiconductor manufacturing.

US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra E. Castillo said these tech hub designers “exemplify place-based economic development strategies at their best: combining federal resources with regional assets, expertise and coalitions to implement transformational opportunities.”

Beginning this week, the EDA also introduced an opportunity for designated technology centers to apply for funding, which could range from $40 million to $70 million each. The agency also awards 29 Strategy Development Grants (SDGs) to help communities promote local planning and coordination activities for future innovation projects in their respective states.
