Apple just released iOS 17.1, MacOS 14.1 and WatchOS 10.1 – here’s what’s new

Jason Hiner/ZDNET

Just last month, Apple users were updating their devices en masse to iOS 17, and now Apple has released the first update of the iPhone operating system.

Along with iOS 17.1, Apple released WatchOS 10.1, MacOS 14.1, and tvOS 17.1 with various bug fixes and feature improvements, including the double-tap for Apple Watch Series 9 And Apple Watch Ultra 2.

To update to the latest available version of their compatible device’s operating system, users can go to the General tab in their system settings and then select Software Update. If a new update is available, it will be shown here.

iOS 17.1 update

The biggest updates unsurprisingly belong to the iPhone. iOS 17.1 introduces the use of cellular data option for AirDrop sharing. Instead of using a Wi-Fi connection, iPhone users can complete the file transfer via cellular data if the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection is lost. This will only be possible if both iPhone users performing the data transfer have iCloud accounts.

The Music app also has new features, such as the Favorites option that allows users to add songs, albums, and playlists to it. These favorites appear in the user’s library and also help the music app make more personalized recommendations. The app also shows suggested songs that are similar to songs in the playlist and allows users to add them to the playlist. Playlists will also have a new set of cover art to choose from.

iOS 17.1 also offers more display options for the popular StandBy feature, which turns your iPhone into a smart display while it’s charging. The latest update also allows users to set timers for the display to go off. For iPhone wallpapers, users can now set specific albums for Photo Shuffle, which shuffles a collection of photos on the iPhone wallpaper.

Apple’s latest iOS update also modifies the iPhone 12 to comply with the French radiation protocol.

WatchOS 10.1 update

Owners of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 can finally enjoy the new feature that Apple announced at its launch event in September. Double-tap allows users to control Apple Watch functions by pressing their index finger and thumb twice without touching the screen. This feature is only available on Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.

NameDrop on the Apple Watch is another feature that debuted in September and hasn’t been generally available until now. This app works similarly to NameDrop on iPhone, which you can use to share contacts from one iPhone to another by bringing them close together. NameDrop on Apple Watch works to share a contact when users touch one Apple Watch to another.

MacOS Sonoma 14.1 update

The vast majority of MacOS 14.1 updates are bug fixes and other improvements, some more prominent than others. The same updates to the Music app that are in iOS 17.1, such as the Favorites feature and song suggestions for playlists, are coming to MacOS Sonoma 14.1.

Apple also makes its warranty status easily available in System Settings. Users can now find the warranty status of Mac, AirPods, and Beats headphones and earphones in the Warranty section of Settings.

iPadOS 17.1 update

The iPadOS 17.1 update adds support for the new Apple Pencil that was announced last week. Apple also rolled out a series of security updates in iOS 17.1 and iPad 17.1, such as better protection of user data in the Mail, Passkeys, Contacts, FindMy, and Photos apps.

tvOS 17.1 and HomePod update

Some lesser-known features announced at Apple’s September event were also not available until now, such as the Enhance Dialogue feature to improve sound clarity when using the HomePod as an Apple TV speaker. This feature cleverly accentuates dialogue when there’s a lot of background noise during a movie or TV show, and fades out the background noise a bit.
