Asgard’s Wrath 2 is the biggest VR game ever. Its main campaign lasts 60 hours, and that’s not even including all the side missions, monthly events, and endless procedurally generated dungeons. It’s a unique game and promises to be like no other game you’ve ever played in VR.

In his weekly column, Nick Sattrich, Senior Content Producer for Android Central, covers all things VR, from new hardware to new games, future technologies and more.
It also makes me wonder if we’ll ever see something like this again.
We could talk about the massive development budget this game undoubtedly had, or the seemingly endless stream of content to be streamed to YouTube once the game is released. But do most players really want to use a VR headset to see the entire game?
Matt Kramer, head of design at Sanzaro Games, explained to me why he thinks we’ll be surprised at how many people actually finish Asgard’s Wrath 2, despite the epic amount of time it takes to use a headset like Meta Quest 3.
According to your schedule
As a 38-year-old with a family, house, pets, gym memberships, and other adult responsibilities, it’s hard to find time to play. I play VR games more than anything else, but, even then, I probably only put Quest games on my head 3-4 times a week.
When I play, the average game session lasts about an hour. If I’m lucky, I can get 90 minutes out of my day to play. I rarely find time to play two hours at a time.
That’s one reason the Quest 3’s short battery life doesn’t bother me too much. Luckily, if you find you have more than 2 hours to play at a time, you can always get these great Quest 3 accessories.
However, for me, my limited playing time means I won’t necessarily be as immersed in such an experience as someone younger and less responsible.
But that’s one of the biggest things that appeals to me about Asgard’s Wrath 2, and one of the biggest takeaways from my interview with Kramer.
Sanzaro Games is very aware and respectful of my adulthood.
As Cramer put it, you can take the headset off whenever you want, take a break—whether it’s for an hour or a few days—and get right back to work when you’re ready.
While I haven’t played the final game and can’t comment on this particular scenario from the first-person experience, it gives me hope that more VR developers will focus on the friction that most VR games create for the player. Many VR games still display the logo, the name of the developer and publisher, the engine the game was made with, and who knows what else before putting the player in the game.
Kramer’s comments make me hopeful that this time to get into gameplay will be much shorter than the average VR game.
It also tells me that Sanzaru games are very aware and respectful of my adulthood. As I said before, I have Much Everyday I don’t have time to spend going through menus and standing around waiting for games to load. I want to play it with the limited time I have and move on.
The game is full of moments that make you feel bad right away, and the combat system is actually challenging unlike most VR games.
I also like how Asgard’s Wrath 2 immediately makes you feel bad and gives you opportunities to prolong that feeling throughout what has been presented to journalists so far.
If the Indiana Jones-esque tomb-robbing intro wasn’t enough to get your blood pumping, the game immediately throws you into boss fights on an epic scale without delay. Once you’re done there and reach the Great Sand Sea, you’ll meet your first companion, a mount, which you can jump on whenever you want, ride across the desert, and slash enemies from behind with your magical whip sword. draw it .
At this point, the game’s 60+ hour long campaign seems to be filled with these moments, and it even uses a combat system that in fact challenging. IGN’s Travis Northrup noted that he played the game on its hardest manual difficulty and found it to be quite a challenge.
I haven’t felt this way since you fell. Even recent games like Dungeons of Eternity seem pretty easy early on, but I’d say the difficulty increases significantly as you progress.
If all that wasn’t enough, the procedurally generated Uncharted Depths mode in Asgard’s Wrath 2 offers active and passive rewards that regularly entice players each week. Better yet, you don’t have to wait to unlock this mode. It is offered as an option almost immediately at the pub where you start your adventure.
Plus, Kramer tells me that the company is planning a lot of content for the game’s post-launch. Monthly challenges don’t just drop silly cosmetic rewards like many other games rely on. According to Kramer, they actually give you “bad armor that looks and functions differently” than anything else you’ll have in the game.
Now, that’s what I want to hear.
Convenience for all
One of the most amazing things for me was realizing that the team was able to deliver a game with full free movement – meaning you use a joystick to move instead of a remote – without people feeling sick.
But it’s not just the usual comfort or tunneling options that make this a reality. It’s the design of the entire game, from the fights to the bases, the roping to the running, and everything in between.
Kramer even told me that one person at the Asgard’s Wrath 2 hands-on event can usually play VR games for roughly 30 minutes before needing to take a break for comfort reasons. After nearly two hours of play, they had to “pull him out” because the demo session was over. It is well designed.
I’m not one to ever get sick in VR, so it’s not something I can prove to myself. However, hearing so many positive comments about the game’s comfort level – including Ian’s handiwork at UploadVR – tells me that Kramer isn’t just waxing poetic about his own game. It’s just better designed than most VR games can be expected to be.
Even people who usually get motion sickness easily can play the game for long periods of time.
And how could I forget what Sanzaru Games did to create an amazing mixed reality experience in Quest 3? Throughout the world, you’ll find “Loki Anomalies,” portals that appear due to Loki’s evil deeds.
When you’re playing Quest 3, some of these anomalies will bring you back to your living room, where Loki will attack and try to take control. Kramer describes it as a unique experience that no other game offers, and it’s another way for the company to create a game that can simultaneously ground you comfortably in reality and safely transport you to another realm. slow
It would be nice if every Meta Quest 3 purchased in 2023 came with the game, wouldn’t it?
Smaller, more powerful, and now with the best mixed reality experience on any Meta headset, the Meta Quest 3 is a unique VR console that’s better than its predecessor in every way. Plus, you’ll get Asgard’s Wrath 2 for free with every Quest 3 purchased this year.
