Apple released iOS 17.2 beta 1 to public beta testers on Friday, and the beta includes at least a dozen new items, including long-awaited features like the Journal app and Call with key verification. There’s no word on when iOS 17.2 will be publicly available, but developers and beta testers can download the beta now.
We recommend downloading the beta on something other than your main device. Since this is not the final version of iOS 17.2, these features may be buggy and battery life may be shortened, so it’s best to keep it on a secondary device.
If you’re a developer or public beta tester, here are some of the new features you’ll find in the first iOS 17.2 beta. Note that these may not be the only new features coming to your iPhone when iOS 17.2 is released.
Magazine program
Apple announced the Journal app alongside iOS 17 at the company’s WWDC event in June, but it wasn’t present at the September 18 update launch. But now it looks like the Journal app will be included in iOS 17.2.
Apple said at WWDC that the app uses on-device machine learning to create personalized writing suggestions. Some of these suggestions are generated using information on your iPhone, such as the photos you’ve taken and the music and podcasts you’ve listened to throughout the day. And if you forget what podcast you listened to earlier in the day—like I usually do—the app will show you that information when you go to log in.
By default, the magazine will show you three reflections at a time.
The app also shows you a handful of topics to write about, called Reflections. Some of my prompts include: “Write about a time you gave someone an unexpected gift” and “Who cheers you up when you’re feeling down?”
But if you don’t want to write about anything you’ve listened to or use Reflection, you can just tap New entry Button. that in New entryyou can write anything you want, or create a voice memo, take a photo or create a video to add to your notebook.
You can also lock the app after closing for a certain amount of time to maintain privacy. So if you close the app and don’t reopen it for a certain amount of time, like five minutes, it will ask for your FaceID or password to reopen it.
Contact confirmation key in messages
Apple announced Call Key verification in December 2022, but this security feature only appeared in iOS 17.2 beta 1.
“By verifying the contact key with iMessage, users facing extraordinary digital threats — such as journalists, human rights activists and members of the government — can verify that they’re only messaging the people they intend to,” Apple said in a message. News release in December
Apple wrote that many people won’t be the target of a cyber attack, but Call Key verification gives an extra layer of security to people who might be.
React with live stickers
Honestly, a heart reaction is enough in this case.
Live Stickers is a new feature that Apple introduced with the launch of iOS 17. This feature allows you to create your own stickers from the images you have taken. In iOS 17.2 beta 1, you can now react to text in messages with your live stickers. To react with a live sticker, tap on text like you want to add a long reaction, then tap Add the sticker In the drop down menu to pull up your tags.
More Memoji customization
In iOS 17.2 beta 1, there is a new menu in the Memoji editor called Body which allows you to edit the appearance of your Memoji body. You can adjust the waist, chest, shoulders and arms of your Memoji in this menu. However, as of this writing there are only three options in each of these sections, so Memoji isn’t a full character creation menu like you’d see in a video game.
Share content between iPhone and Apple Vision Pro
Apple announced its Vision Pro headset at the company’s WWDC event in June. While you can’t buy the Vision Pro yet—Apple plans to launch the headset in the U.S. in early 2024—iOS 17.2 beta 1 introduces a setting that allows your iPhone to act as an additional display for it works
This setting is called AirPlay Receiver and you can find it below AirPlay and Handoff In Apple’s settings, it says that AirPlay Receiver allows you to stream or share content from the Vision Pro headset to your iPhone.
Shared playlists on Apple Music Music
With iOS 17.2 beta 1, Apple Music subscribers can collaborate on playlists with other subscribers. To collaborate, you go into a playlist and tap an icon in the top-right corner of your screen that shows someone with a plus sign.
The weather widget has been updated
In previous versions of iOS, you have three options for the weather widget: a small tile, a medium-sized tile strip, and a large tile that takes up half of your screen. All increased in size, showing current weather conditions in greater detail.
However, in the first beta version of iOS 17.2, you have to choose six Weather widgets. The first three are the original small, medium and large tiles. The three new widgets are all small tile-sized, but show more detail for the day.
A tile shows the current state, precipitation, UV index, wind level and air quality index. Another tile shows current conditions plus expected conditions for the next four days. And the last new tile shows when you can expect sunrise and sunset.
New digital clock widget
In iOS 17.2 beta 1, the clock widget is also updated. The clock widget now allows you to easily read the time on a digital clock.
The new Digital Clock widget is easier to read, and the new Weather widget packs more information into a small package.
The News app supports Live Activities
The News app is also getting an update in iOS 17.2 beta 1. Now, you can enable Live Activities for the app, so you can follow news events like the election as they happen on iPhones with Live Activity.
The Apple TV app has been updated
The Apple TV app is also getting an update with iOS 17.2 beta 1. If you open the app and tap Store In the bottom menu, you will see Movies And TV programs Sectionsat the top of your screenGone.
Local Awareness option in Emergency Alerts
Local Awareness aims to improve the emergency alerts you receive.
With iOS 17.1 beta 1, there is a new option in the Emergency Alerts menu called Local Awareness. Apple writes that if you enable this option, it will use your approximate location to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and reliability of the emergency alerts you receive.
More contact poster customization options
Call posters are another new feature that Apple has introduced with iOS 17. With iOS 17.2 beta 1, you can customize your call posters even more by giving the call poster the option to send rainbow text.
Apple has not announced the release date of iOS 17.2. The company may include more features in iOS 17.2, and there is no guarantee that these features will be included in the update.
