Pioneering Oracle Cloud Computing Infrastructure to Boost Rwanda’s Tech Goals – Tech in Africa

Oracle plans to build cloud computing infrastructure in Rwanda by June 2024, accelerating the country’s aspirations to become a regional technology hub.

Cloud computing, the provision of services such as data storage, servers, and software over the Internet, enables rapid scalability, flexibility, and innovation.

In a recent podcast, Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, revealed this pioneering Oracle partnership to move Rwanda towards cloud services, in line with its ambitious technology development goals.

The initial phase will begin in December, with Oracle identifying a strategic site in the Kigali Innovation City for an 18-month data center construction timeline. The projected commissioning in June 2024 is significant for this facility.

Beyond infrastructure, Rwanda asked Oracle to leverage existing cloud resources to empower startups, governments and businesses and foster a competitive ecosystem. Ingabire said this would attract more companies and create an innovation-friendly environment.

Adoption of cloud computing is critical as Rwanda explores and implements technical solutions. With today’s data protection critical, cloud infrastructure is an essential asset.

Oracle’s extensive presence in Rwanda reflects a broader commitment to developing the country’s technology capabilities. The initiative will strengthen digital infrastructure by providing advanced cloud services and boost Rwanda’s aspirations as a leading regional technology hub.

This builds on a 2015 agreement between Oracle and Rwanda to strengthen ICT skills in colleges across the country through learning centers with curriculum, software, technology and access to certification. Cultivating talent has helped Rwanda’s technological advancement.

Oracle’s cloud project is an example of Rwanda’s commitment to becoming a technology powerhouse. As it unfolds, it can open new avenues for innovation, growth and development. The growing role of Oracle’s technology ecosystem represents a major step in transforming Rwanda’s landscape. The country’s technological ambitions continue to grow as the foundation for cloud computing is laid.

Beyond infrastructure, effective use of cloud computing will be critical. Adopting a strategy by startups and companies can maximize its potential. With the right data governance policies in place, Rwanda can responsibly harness the benefits of the cloud.

While an important milestone, realizing the full vision requires cultivating talent and cloud-ready users across departments. Oracle’s hands-on support for building capabilities makes the transition smooth.

Rwanda’s technological aspirations are within reach through a forward-looking partnership with Oracle. As a pioneer in the cloud computing space, Oracle can accelerate Rwanda’s emergence as a regional innovation leader if stakeholders collectively embrace the enormous potential of the cloud.
