Brave responds to Bing and ChatGPT with an anonymous and secure AI chatbot

Brave, the privacy-focused browser that automatically blocks unwanted ads and trackers, is launching its AI assistant Leo, which the company claims offers unmatched privacy compared to other AI chatbot services. After several months of testing, Leo is now available for free to all Brave desktop users running version 1.60 of the web browser. Leo will be rolling out in stages over the next few days and will be available for Android and iOS in the coming months.

Leo’s main features aren’t too different from other AI chatbots like Bing Chat and Google Bard: it can translate, answer questions, summarize web pages, and generate new content. Brave says Leo’s advantages over these offerings are that, with the company’s focus on privacy, chatbot conversations aren’t recorded or used to train AI models, and it doesn’t require login information to use. However, like other AI chatbots, Brave claims that Leos’ output should be treated with care for possible mistakes or errors.

Brave users can access Leo directly from the browser’s sidebar, seen here (pictured) on the right side of the web page.

Brian Bundy, CTO and co-founder of Brave, said in a press release that AI can be a powerful tool, but it can also create growing data privacy concerns, and a privacy solution is needed. Brave is committed to pairing AI with user privacy, providing our users with secure and personalized AI assistance where they already spend their time online.

Brave says the additional models will be available to Leo Premium users alongside access to higher quality calls, priority queuing during peak usage, higher rate limits and early access to new features. We’ve reached out to Brave to find out when these additional benefits will be available and will update this story if we hear back.
