Just in time for the horror season, the new Ghostbusters VR game for Meta Quest 3 has arrived., With plenty of ghosts and slime to go around. I was lucky enough to grow up with the original Ghostbusters and that was my first memory of watching a movie. In fact, I remember watching it from the back seat of my parents’ car at a drive-in theater and hiding on the floor of the car as Slimer flew across the screen. Will the new Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord satisfy that nostalgia enough for me? yes and no But is it fun? Yes, yes it is.

Originally scheduled for release in 2022, the long-delayed Ghostbusters VR game brings characters, ghosts, missions and more to a familiar world. The game is available for PSVR2, Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 with identical game modes on each platform. It even allows cross-platform play.
There is an exclusive mode: a mixed reality mode where you fight the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in your living room while he rips off the ceiling, only available in Quest 3.
For each hardware set, there are two versions of the game you can buy – the base pack for $34.99 and the full Containment version for $54.99. The latter gets you six months of post-launch content, which includes gear skins, over 10 additional avatars, a Slimer Hunt mode, and discounts on other bonus materials.
I spent my time playing this game on my Quest 3, but I also ran it on Quest 2. On either headset, the game was pretty much the same. Of course, the actual graphics and gameplay were better on the new device. Whichever version you buy, you get an animated art style rather than a realistic look at the franchise. I thought the style was great and helped the game to be less serious and give more freedom in the design of each episode.
This game is not made to please die-hard Ghostbusters or even new fans of the series.
That being said, while I like the game’s art style and the game itself, it won’t be something that will satisfy OG Ghostbusters fans or even new fans. Instead, the game allows fans from both sides of the franchise’s history to get a taste of being a member of the ghost hunting team with familiar gear and expressions. If you enter the game with the goal of having a good time in a fun movie world, it’s going to be a great time. But you shouldn’t buy it for knowledge.
Ok enough, let’s get to the fun parts. I really enjoyed playing Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord. You start the game in San Francisco and help the Ghostbusters find supplies, find a missing colleague, and find out what happened to the wealthy and reclusive Gustav Hookfaber. This is your introduction to gameplay and basic equipment.
This is also where you’ll first see your creepy ghost lord and a spectral AI to help you on your solo missions. With your meter, trap, and PKE Proton pack ready, you can now start taking on the rest of the game. First you need to go to the headquarters, where you choose your avatar uniform and buy your equipment upgrades. You earn money by completing missions – there is no pay to play here.
While you can play Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord solo, you can have more fun in the multiplayer modes.
That AI ghost you meet in the intro is there to help you as you work your way through the game in solo mode. The game is still fun, but it loses some of the extra charm of chatting with friends and working together to defeat the city’s terrifying ghosts. Playing through multiple levels with Nick Satrich, Android Central’s VR guru, the gameplay was a lot of fun.
We started with the “on the clock” game mode: you have a certain amount of time to take out as many ghosts as possible, blast the smaller ones with your proton pack, and trap the bigger ones. Larger enemies, regardless of the game mode you’re playing, will require you to blow them up until the life meter gets low so you can lasso them with the energy stream and trap the soul.
This mode can be confusing with smaller play areas, ghosts flying all over the place, and everyone trying to take out the ghosts. This is where the Quest 3’s mixed reality technology can come in handy, if you need to survey your surroundings.
Next, we did the “Harvester” game mode, where you and your team have to repair a large ghost trap, place cans on it to fill with captured ghosts, and then use those cans Return to ECTO-1. the iconic Ghostbuster car) so you can bring them back to HQ for permanent containment. This was fun because it requires teamwork to find the parts and keep your team from being taken out by the ghosts during the repair.
In the other game mode, Exorcism, you and your teammates must scan everyday objects with your PKE meter to find possessed items. Once you find one, you must take it to a “generator” corresponding to the item to release the soul so you can capture it in a trap. After capturing three object ghosts, you face a boss ghost in an epic battle.
Last but not least is the “Giga Trap Retrieval” mode, where you find out more about the Ghost Lord by extracting a Giga Trap tuned to the frequency of the demon’s soul. After the fight to get the trap, you’ll need to make your way back to the HQ to finish extracting the contents. Of course, you’ll have plenty of ghosts to deal with and deal with while escaping with the Giga Trap, in addition to not letting the trap explode – a piece of cake!
The game is not a linear story and the completion of each level progresses along the line. Instead, it keeps the story alive while completing various tasks for a final mission.
Each game mode reveals a little more about the story of the conflict between the Ghost Lord and Gustav Hookfaber, but the game does not follow a linear path where you are constantly immersed in the story. I can see how this could be boring for some players, but I found it fun by focusing on the fun of playing with others and blasting ghosts.
A unique character that ties back to the original movie is Mini-Puft Mayhem in the MR Quest 3 minigame. As I mentioned before, you play this game using the cameras that pass through your house that the game is on. After finding a bag of marshmallows on the ground, they start to come alive and then disappear. This will cause the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man to jump through your ceiling and attack you.
You’re equipped with a slingshot, which you use to shoot floating mini Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man characters at the big man. It’s a fun game that shows what mixed reality can be like. It has nothing to do with the rest of the Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord story, but it’s still a fun little game. Thanks to the ability to play Quest 3 on the TV, my kids loved popping marshmallows while watching each other play.
Do not be afraid of any ghosts
I’m sure many Ghostbuster super fans will find things about this game that just don’t satisfy their nostalgia cravings. Would I have liked to have some of the original characters and ghosts from the first movies? Of course, me. But looking at the game as a standalone feature that incorporates fun bits from the past is a good time.
Nothing about Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord is meant to be serious. It has lots of fun quotes from your helpers, light-hearted gameplay, and a way to take on some cartoon ghosts with friends online. It’s a great VR game where you can play slime-throwing ghosts with friends in the same world, which was all that mattered to me in the end.
